West Chicago, Illinois: December 20, 2016 - The West Chicago Police Department has issued a warning to motorists not to leave unattended, unlocked vehicles running, in response to incidents of motor vehicle thefts in West Chicago, Warrenville and Geneva on December 20, 2016 during the overnight hours. All cases involved vehicles left running with the keys in the ignition, unlocked and unattended.
The stolen vehicle from Geneva was observed by West Chicago Police officers and stopped, and one offender was taken into custody.
"We understand people don't like getting into a cold car, but this is a crime of opportunity and it can be prevented. We ask you to remain inside your vehicle while it is warming up. Or get an extra set of keys so you can keep it locked while your vehicle is warming up", said Officer Mike Rosenwinkel about the recent auto thefts.
