THE “BIG RED ONE” AND THE FIRST DIVISION MUSEUM

Dr. Paul Herbert from the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park will provide an update on the museum’s major redesign and discuss the 1st Infantry Division’s post-Vietnam history on Wednesday, November 2, at 7:30 pm. Admission and parking are free.

Herbert, the First Division Museum’s executive director, will outline renovation plans, including a new gallery dedicated to the history of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division since its return from Vietnam in 1970. The gallery will cover the “Big Red One’s” distinguished service in the Cold War, Desert Storm, the Balkans, and Iraq and Afghanistan. Information about the Division’s current missions will be displayed as well.

As previously announced, the renovation requires the First Division Museum to close to the public following its Veterans Day programming on November 11. The museum expects to reopen in late summer 2017, coinciding with the centennial of the 1st Infantry Division and World War I.

Herbert is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa. He also holds a Ph. D. in History from the Ohio State University. A retired Colonel, United States Army, Herbert held a variety of operational assignments, including command of the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry, and service on the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C. He joined the First Division Museum as executive director in 2005.

Herbert’s presentation will be at Le Jardin inside the Cantigny Park Visitors Center. Doors open at 6:30 pm. A cash bar will be available along with a limited food menu. Coffee is complimentary.

The event is part of the First Division Museum’s Date with History, a monthly series featuring discussions with authors, panelists, historians and special guests. Information about upcoming programs is online at FirstDivisionMuseum.org.
