WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND IN WARRENVILLE MOSQUITO TRAP

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) recently confirmed a positive test for West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in Warrenville. This is the fifth positive test from the same mosquito trap in our community during the 2025 season.

DCHD has confirmed the first human death related to West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County for 2025. There have been 11 human WNV cases reported to date in DuPage County in 2025.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people do not experience symptoms, but the virus can lead to serious health complications in some cases.

Help Prevent Mosquito Bites

Residents can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites and the spread of West Nile virus by following these safety tips:

  • Use EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outdoors
  • Avoid being outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active
  • Wear long sleeves, pants, socks, and shoes to limit exposed skin
  • Keep windows and doors closed or make sure screens are in good repair
  • Dump out standing water in containers like flowerpots, birdbaths, buckets, and toys
  • Report standing water that doesn’t drain after a week to the Illinois Department of Public Health
