HELP SHAPE MAIN STREET'S FUTURE: DOWNTOWN MODERINZATION & BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
The City of West Chicago is excited to announce the launch of the Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project, a transformative investment in the community’s historic core. This project, focused on safety, infrastructure, and streetscape improvements, is part of a broader set of initiatives advancing downtown revitalization.
Project Scope
The Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project will focus on designing a new streetscape along Main Street, from Washington Street to Wilson Avenue, and Turner Court, from Washington Street to Main Street. Planned improvements include:
- Safety upgrades such as high-visibility crosswalks, ADA accessibility, curb extensions, and upgraded lighting.
- Infrastructure enhancements including new water mains, replacement of lead service lines, sewer lining, and stormwater management improvements.
- Streetscape and placemaking features such as new sidewalks, decorative pavement, landscaping, signage, public art, lighting, seating, and street furniture to create a more inviting downtown atmosphere.
Timeline
The Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project will take place in several phases:
- Public Input (Now – Spring 2026): The City is currently seeking feedback from residents, businesses, and visitors. Input will be gathered through surveys and public engagement opportunities over the next six months.
- Design & Engineering (Mid–Late 2026): Based on community input, detailed plans will be developed for the streetscape design.
- Bidding & Construction (Spring–Fall 2027): The project is anticipated to go out to public bid in Fall 2026, with construction anticipated to begin in Spring 2027.
How to Get Involved
The City invites everyone to participate in shaping the future of Downtown West Chicago. An initial survey is available now, and additional opportunities for community input will be offered throughout the planning and design process.

Ongoing Downtown Efforts
The modernization project is one of several coordinated efforts underway:
- Downtown Investment Program – Encouraging property owners to reinvest in downtown buildings and support long-term economic vitality.
- Retail & Restaurant Grant Program – Providing targeted support to small businesses looking to expand or establish themselves in the heart of West Chicago.
- West Washington Street Site Clean-Up – Preparing a City-owned property for future redevelopment by removing contaminated soil and readying the site for new opportunities.
- Downtown Revitalization Commission – A temporary advisory body that will help guide policy, promotion, and community engagement to strengthen downtown’s future. Applications are now open for residents and business community members interested in serving.
A Shared Vision
By pairing infrastructure improvements with property reinvestment, small business support, redevelopment planning, and community engagement, the City is building momentum toward a safer, more vibrant, and thriving downtown for all.
