| West Chicago is a community of makers. For generations, local businesses and workers have turned ideas, materials, and skilled labor into products used across the country. This October, the City is celebrating those contributions through Manufacturing Month and its first Manufacturing Summit. On October 5, Mayor Daniel Bovey, together with the City Council, proclaimed October 2026 as Manufacturing Month in West Chicago. The proclamation recognizes the manufacturers and workers who help shape the community’s economy and create opportunities for future generations. |

West Chicago’s railroad and industrial history is closely tied to the growth of its manufacturing community. Manufacturing has historically been the City’s largest economic sector, employing more than 4,500 workers. More than 100 manufacturing companies call West Chicago home, producing food and beverages, steel and metal products, equipment, electronics, machinery, and other goods.
These businesses provide jobs, invest in local facilities, and contribute to the national economy. Their success reflects the skills of workers who develop products, operate equipment, maintain production systems, and find new ways to meet customers’ needs.
The Jel Sert Company’s 100th anniversary this year offers one example of that lasting connection. Since moving to West Chicago in 1969, the company has continued to grow and invest in local production and jobs. Its history is part of the larger story of manufacturers that have built their businesses and futures here.
Bringing Manufacturers and Resources Together
On October 7, the City hosted its inaugural Manufacturing Summit, bringing local manufacturers and community resource partners together to celebrate successes and explore programs and services that support the industry. Speakers from WorkNet DuPage and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity shared information about resources available to manufacturers. Representatives from the Greater Chicago Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (GCAMP), Choose DuPage, School District 94, West Chicago Public Library, Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce, and West Chicago Park District also shared information about their programs and services. |

The summit provided another opportunity to strengthen relationships among businesses and the organizations that can help them succeed. Participant feedback will help the City shape future gatherings around manufacturers’ needs. During Manufacturing Month, the City invites residents to recognize the businesses and workers behind the products made here. Their skills, ideas, and continued investment help carry West Chicago’s manufacturing tradition forward. |
