Mayor Daniel Bovey appointed David Carlson as West Chicago City Clerk on Monday, September 21, 2026, to fill the current vacancy in the elected office. The City Council confirmed the appointment that evening.
The appointment follows the City Council’s approval of Ordinance No. 26-O-0021 on September 8. The ordinance restored the elected City Clerk position to the City Code and declared the office vacant.
The City Clerk remains an elected City office. Carlson will serve for the remainder of the current term, and voters will elect the next City Clerk at the consolidated election on April 3, 2029. The position carries annual compensation of $4,500.
As City Clerk, Carlson will perform the duties established by Illinois law and the City Code. These responsibilities include attending City Council meetings and preparing meeting minutes, maintaining official City records, providing required notices of City Council meetings, certifying City documents, and serving as the City's Local Election Official, including certifying public questions and receiving candidate nomination papers.

Carlson worked at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) for 34 years in research, management, and leadership roles, including serving as Head of Business Services from 1999 to 2012. He has lived in West Chicago since 2006 and was appointed to the City's Environmental Commission in October 2025.
“I look forward to working with City leadership and staff to support transparent City government and maintain public confidence,” Carlson said.
The West Chicago City Council generally meets the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 475 Main Street, unless otherwise posted.
