WCCHS WINS ILLINOIS LIFESMARTS CHAMPIONSHIP

West Chicago Community High School finished in first place in the 28th annual Illinois LifeSmarts competition.  The competition took place on February 27, 2024.  The team was led by captain and senior Angie Jacobo, and included seniors Arely Jacobo, Eric Diaz, Zitlaly Garcia-Medina, and freshman Alexander Jacobo.  The team is coached by Don Zabelin.

“I really enjoyed working alongside my team and competing against some great players. Being able to showcase the knowledge that we’ve learned throughout the year was very rewarding,” Angie said.

LifeSmarts, a program of the National Consumers League, evaluates students’ knowledge of personal finance, technology, the environment, health & safety, and consumer rights.

In the finals, West Chicago defeated DePaul College Prep High School by a score of 95-60.  “Halfway through the final match, our team had a 55-30 lead.  It was great to see them maintain their intensity and secure the state championship,” said Zabelin.

LifeSmarts begins as an online competition and concludes in a quiz bowl, in person competition. For additional information, go to www.lifesmarts.org
